09/06/2011 - From The Press Box: Bender May Be City's Best Player

Jeff Motz
Jeff Motz

Tay Bender may have established himself as city's best quarterback last Friday.  The 6-4, 218 pound Kansas State recruit sparked an air assault on Omaha Westside, as Lincoln Southwest won 27-14.

Bender's passing resembles what a young college quarterback would look like in the first year or two of a Division I program.  Still, that's pretty good for a kid that's a senior in high school.

Southwest has had its share of good quarterbacks.  Blake Bolles led the Silver Hawks to the 2005 Class A State Championship, only to finish the season with one the title game against champion Millard North.  Austin Cassidy, now a member of the Nebraska secondary, was the signal caller the following season and took Southwest to another playoff appearance.

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder must have seen something special in Bender when he recruited him last year.  The Wildcats may develop him into a better quarterback, who could run the option or throw the football.

It's not just Bender that helps form the powerful Southwest backfield.  Running back Jake Jordan demonstrated how tough and quick he is running the football.  Junior receiver Josh Bandaras has popped up on the radar screen as another potential Division I caliber of player.  Brandon Reilly is tough on both sides of the football.  His 58-yard touchdown reception made our highlight reel on our YouTube page:

Friday's Lincoln Northeast/Lincoln North Star football game is our Lincoln Electric System Game of the Week.  The Rockets will have a chip on their shoulder after falling 34-14 at Norfolk last Friday.  North Star got some momentum with a win at Omaha Benson.  Last year's game was decided on a two-point conversion, in favor of the Rockets.

If you haven't noticed yet, we'll have high school volleyball ratings on our website, courtesy of  I highly recommend becoming a member of the site because of the extensive coverage high school volleyball on this site.

Darren Ivy runs the site and is the publisher of a couple of small town newspapers in central Nebraska.  Ivy is a Columbus native and a 1996 Columbus High School graduate.  Ironically, Ivy and I played basketball against each other from the time we were in 7th grade all the way until our final game our senior year, when my Northeast ball club claimed a second straight state title.

Ivy maintains a great perspective on the high school volleyball scene, as well as small college and Division I competition in Nebraska.  We're privileged to have Ivy and to help provide the high school ratings this season.
