Lincoln East almost pitched another shutout on Friday afternoon, proving just how tough the Spartans could be the rest of the season.
After holding Lincoln Pius X scoreless last week, East recorded 15 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and held Lincoln Northeast to minus 31 yards in rushing in holding off the Rockets by the final of 41-7 at Seacrest Field.
The Spartans (2-0) jumped out to a 21-0 first half lead, after they picked up seven quarterback sacks and recovered a pair of fumbles that led to touchdowns. Northeast recovered an East fumble at the Rocket 7-yard line, but defensive lineman Trevor Jeffrey recovered a Northeast fumble. That set up the Spartans' first score, when running back Billie Stephenson ran it in to the end zone on the next play.
A 30-yard punt return from DeKendrick McCray set up a 10-yard touchdown run by East quarterback Austin Schneider. The Spartans capitalized again, when Will Kroeker recovered the ball on a bad Northeast snap. That eventually led to a 2-yard scoring run from Jack Larson.
Then with 5:16 left in the third quarter, East's lead jumped to 28-0 when Larson scored from 40-yards out. He then added another touchdown on a 4-yard run for a 35-0 advantage with 1:43 left in the third. McCray, who had 100-yards in punt returns, scored on a 46-yard punt return for East's final scoring strike with 11 minutes left in the game.
Northeast (0-2) drove 80-yards and scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah Collier to wide-receiver Jesston Howard and avoided another shutout.
Schneider had 109 yards rushing to lead East. Collier completed 12 of 17 passes for 184 yards and the touchdown for Northeast. Howard caught five of those passes and had 87 yards receiving in the loss.
