02/02/2019 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Junior Jays Hold On By A Thread To Beat Thunderbolts

By LincolnPrepSports.com Staff

Seems appropriate to say that Saturday's showdown between Class A No. 6 Omaha Creighton Prep and Class B No. 1 Lincoln Pius X was one for the ages.

It definitely lived up to expectations.

But the Junior Jays, like last March, were able to escape with a 63-62 win over the Thunderbolts before a sellout crowd at Bishop Flavin Gym.

Last season, both teams met in the Class A quarterfinal, which took three overtimes for Prep (who went on to win the state tournament) to beat Pius X 83-80.

Saturday's rematch met with high expectations.

Pius X's Charlie Easley scored a basket with one minute left for a 62-61 lead.  Prep responded with a reverse layup on the other end from Spencer Schomers with 11 seconds to play.

The Thunderbolts had a chance for the win, when Easley's three pointer rattled out of the rim and Junior Jay senior and Nebraska commit Akol Arop grabbed the rebound to hold on for the victory.

Easley led all scorers with 29 points for Pius X, while Arop finished with 25 to lead the Junior Jays.

The Junior Jays had a 22-18 first quarter lead.  Then, Pius X rallied for a late second quarter run when Easley and Kyle Kluthe hit three-pointers to give the 'Bolts a 38-32 halftime lead.

Prep responded with a 17-2 run to start the third quarter, before Pius X bounced back for the fourth quarter finish.

Thomas Faber added 14 points for Prep, while Schomers finished with 12.

Kolbe Rada finished with 11 points in the loss for Pius X.
