- BOYS BASKETBALL: Rasgorshek's Three Lifts Crete Past Waverly
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---Ethan Rasgorshek hit a clutch three-pointer with six seconds remaining to give the Crete boys basketball team a 42-40 win at Waverly on Thursday night.
It was the second shot Rasgorshek had taken in the game and it had come off the heels of a go-ahead three-pointer from Waverly's Ben Carter with 23 seconds left to give the Vikings a 40-39 lead.
Waverly had one chance to get a final shot, as Carter received the ball on an inbounds pass, tried to dribble to an open spot on the left side of the floor. But time ran out before he could get a shot off in time.
While Rasgorshek may have given the Cardinals the win with his three-pointer, freshman guard Jaxson Weyand took the honors of being Crete's top scorer with 18 points while Sam Rasgorshek added 11 in the victory.
Crete (2-4) took charge midway through the first quarter, after going on a 9-0 run to lead 14-8. Waverly got as close as three points in the second quarter, when senior Jay Adams connected on a three-pointer to narrow Crete's lead to 14-11, before the Cardinals took off and outscored the Vikings 8-4 the rest of the half.
Carter, who led Waverly (2-4) with 18 points, helped spark a 12-7 third quarter for the Vikings, who trailed 29-27 entering the final quarter.
