- BOYS BASKETBALL: Jenkins' 27, Newton's 18 Help Lincoln High Pull Away from Northeast
By Jeff Motz
Keyshawn Jenkins and Graham Newton turned into a two-man wrecking crew Thursday night.
The Lincoln High seniors combined for 45 points to help the Links to a 72-49 win over Lincoln Northeast in boys basketball at the Ed Johnson Gym.
For Lincoln High (3-2), it took a 10-0 run to finish the first half to finally pull ahead and away from the Rockets. Jenkins, known for attacking the basket, saw Northeast's zone defense forcing him outside. He knocked down a pair of pivotal three-pointers, as part of his 13-point second quarter that sparked the run and gave the Links a 34-25 halftime lead.
Then Northeast (1-4) rallied to cut a 13 point deficit down to five, when Carson Busch connected on a three-pointer and Jake Bard scored five points, with the Lincoln High lead down to 38-33 midway through the third quarter.
The Links then outscored the Rockets 15-2 to finish the period and continued to dominate in the final frame. Newton, a 6-6 senior, scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half.
Busch and sophomore guard Pierce Bazil each scored 14 points for Northeast. Bazil scored ten of his points in the first quarter, which saw the Rockets with a 17-15 lead. Northeast's last lead came at 25-24 with 3-and-a-half minutes left in the second quarter, when Bard connected on a three-pointer.
