ASHLAND---Defense came through for the Lincoln Lutheran football team, by making four stops on fourth down, while Colby Bliss ran 41 times for 192 yards and Warriors beat Ashland-Greenwood 26-21 Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
Lutheran (7-2) have won six straight games and will have a rematch with the Bluejays next Friday night at Nebraska Wesleyan's Abel Stadium.
Bliss also ran for three touchdowns and had eight tackles on the night.
Ashland-Greenwood, though, struck first on their opening drive for 75-yards when quarterback Hunter Washburn found Sawyer Buller on a 25-yard pass, then added a 2-point conversion from Nolan Kasuske.
Lutheran went three-and-out and Ethan Zager's punt was blocked deep and recovered at the Warrior 6-yard line. The first of four defensive stops happened when the Warriors stopped Bluejay running back Bryce Kittrell short of the goal line.
Bliss then ended the next Lutheran drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to put the Warriors on the board trailing 8-7 with 3:26 left in the first quarter.
Facing a fourth down situation, Lutheran capped off a drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Josh Duitsman to Collin Morrison, which gave the Warriors a 13-9 lead with 6:40 left in the second quarter. More than a minute later, Ashland-Greenwood sprinted back with a 27-yard touchdown run from Washburn. However, the two-point conversion failed and the Bluejays led 14-13.
Lutheran mounted a four-play, 67-yard drive that was capped on a 3-yard scoring run from Bliss to take a 20-14 halftime lead.
Ashland-Greenwood took their final lead with 1:05 left in the third quarter when Kasuske scored off a 59-yard pass from Cale Jacobson through a double-reverse play.
Bliss capped the scoring with an 8-yard run to put the Warriors ahead for good with 7:02 left.
