- FOOTBALL: Hawks Defense Too Much To Overcome For Gators
By Jeff Motz
While it may have taken the offense a little more time to get going, the Lincoln Southwest defense was primed and ready.
The Silver Hawks capitalized early on some Lincoln North Star miscues and beat the Gators 43-0 before an estimated crowd of 4,000 Friday night at Seacrest Field.
Southwest (1-0) got an early lead, when Taylor Boutmahavong sacked North Star quarterback Gavyn Leitschuck at the Silver Hawk 32-yard line and forced a fumble on fourth down. Nick Leader scooped the ball up and ran 61-yards for the touchdown and a 7-0 advantage with 4:43 remaining in the first quarter.
Dylan Jorgensen booted a 33-yard field goal to put Southwest up 10-0, then Laken Harnly found TaeVyn Grixby on a 36-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds left that ultimately gave the Hawks a 17-0 halftime lead.
Offensively, Southwest continued to heat up and expose North Star's defense. To start the second half, the Hawks marched 62 yards and in five plays capped the drive on an 8-yard touchdown run from Caden McCormack.
Jorgensen belted a 47-yard field goal from the middle of the field and McCormack scored again, this time on a 60-yard run for a 34-0 third quarter lead.
Nolan Milius defensively came through for Southwest, by forcing a safety when he sacked North Star back up quarterback DJ McGarvie in the fourth quarter, which prompted a running clock. Jaden Wheeler then scored on a one-yard run to cap off Southwest's scoring.
North Star (0-1) committed five fumbles in the game.
