- DISTRICT BASEBALL: Southwest Captures A-4 Title Over Westside
By Jeff Motz
One of the hottest teams in Nebraska high school baseball almost fell victim to an upset-minded team in the district semifinals, but managed to flex its muscle win out the tournament.
Lincoln Southwest escaped with a 7-6 win in 9 innings over Norfolk early Saturday afternoon and jumped ahead early later in the day and cruised past No. 2-seed Omaha Westside 12-2 in six innings to win the A-4 district title at Sherman Field.
The Silver Hawks (23-6) now take an eight-game win streak into the Class A State Baseball Tournament that starts May 12 at Werner Perk in Papillion, likely as the No. 4 seed and in the 1pm opening round game.
Southwest scored eight runs over the first three innings before Westside scored two runs in the top of the fourth. The Silver Hawks scored four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the game's final frame, Southwest put two runners on base. The final run scoring off a wild pitch to give the 'Hawks the victory.
Dawson Linder earned the win, after he pitched five innings and gave up only two runs and four hits before Preston Peet game in to finish the sixth. Both pitchers combined for eight strikeouts.
At the plate, Southwest racked up 15 hits. Cam Frederick had two doubles and two RBI, while Cooper Samway was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Cade Moeller drove in two runs.
