04/04/2018 - BASEBALL: Van Treeck Throws No-Hitter As LSE Shuts Down No. 2 Creighton Prep

By Jeff Motz

It became apparent by the time the seventh inning rolled around that Lincoln Southeast head coach Montana Jones was going to leave ace pitcher Logan Van Treeck alone and have him finish what very few high school baseball players ever experience.

Van Treeck, a lefty, threw a complete game, no-hit shut out as the No. 9 Knights upset No. 2 ranked and defending Class A champion Omaha Creighton Prep 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Sherman Field.

Van Treeck was on target with his fast ball, striking out five batters, while allowing only two walks, while another reached on an error.  He picked off Prep's Drew Dunham at first base in the second inning, while Noah Peyton fell victim when he was caught in a 1-3-6 jam while trying to steal second in the third inning.

Southeast's only run came in the fifth inning, when Jackson Kraus led off with a walk, then advanced when Austin Jisa reached on an error.  Kraus scored on a fielder's choice, when Cade Cooper hit a ground ball to Prep shortstop PJ Loucks, who threw home for the force out.  Kraus just beat the throw to score the run for the Knights.

The Junior Jays (7-2) led off the sixth with Peyton reaching on an error committed by Southeast second baseman Grant Roscoe.  Peyton made it as far as third, but Van Treeck was able to retire the next three hitters on ground outs.

Evan Laney got on base off a Southeast error in the seventh, but Van Treeck retired Cam Blossom on a strikeout and Dunham flew out to centerfield to end the game.

Prep pitcher Dylan Phillips threw five innings, allow a run and two hits while striking out nine Southeast batters.

The only two hits for Southeast (4-2) came in the first from Garrett Olson on an infield single to third and Tyler Workman's lead-off double in the fourth inning.
