It may have been the first game of the season Thursday, but the Waverly baseball team managed to hit the ball as if they were in mid-season form.

The Vikings racked up 14 hits in a 7-4 victory over Lincoln Northeast at Sherman Field.

Treyton Kozal sparked a four-run, five hit inning in the first with a single to right, while Jay Adams followed it up with a base hit.  Thatcher Kozal connected on a two-run double to right-center field before being forced out at third when Rhett Jordon reached on a fielder's choice off a grounder to Northeast pitcher Joe Richter.

Nolan Brown, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, delivered an RBI single that scored Jordon and later scored on an RBI single from Sawyer Schroeder.

Northeast countered with two runs in the bottom of the 1st, when Darius Perry and Donovan Speer each scored on a single from Daustin Manske.

Waverly (1-0) added another run in the 3rd inning, when Jordon scored on a past ball.  The Vikings put up two more insurance runs in the 5th when Rylan Gubbels hit an RBI single and scored Kaleb Carillo.  Treyton Kozal delivered another RBI single to score Gubbels.

Northeast (0-1) sparked a little rally in the bottom of the 7th, when Perry reached on a single and later scored off a single from Speer, who later scored when Richter reached on an error before Colby Helmstadter grounded out to end the game.

Richter, who pitched 3 1/3 innings, struck out five batters, while allowing eight hits and gave up four runs.

Treyton Kozal pitched two innings allowed two runs and one hit, while recording striking out two batters.
