- CLASS A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Westside Knocks Off Defending State Champ LSW
By Jeff Motz
Omaha Westside did its job Friday night by controlling the tempo without having to rely on an abundance of offense.
Quinn Weidemann hit a three-pointer just before the end of the first half and helped the Warriors hold on for a 45-40 win over defending Class A state champion Lincoln Southwest at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Weidemann, the University of Wyoming recruit, nailed the three with just seconds left in the second quarter that put Westside ahead 27-22 at halftime. She finished with a game-high 22 points, 14 of those coming in the first half.
Westside extended their lead to 29-22 but Southwest rallied back behind Jaden Ferguson's 10 performance in the third quarter. The Silver Hawks trailed by one before Weidemann hit a left-side baseline jumper to give the Warriors a 39-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Several times, Southwest had chances to take control of the game but either missed shots or turnovers plagued them. Neither team scored until 3:05 remaining when Ferguson scored on a drive to pull the Silver Hawks within one, 39-38.
Free throws were key for Westside, who went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, in the fourth quarter. Liz Robinson sank four free-throws as part of her 10-point performance and Weidemann sank a pair to seal the win with 17-seconds remaining.
Ferguson led Southwest with 20 points. The Silver Hawks finish the season at 18-9.
Westside now plays in Saturday's 6:30pm Class A championship against top-seed Millard South. The Warriors won the 2015 state title, which Weidemann, as a freshman, was a starter on that team.
