LINCOLN SOUTHWEST 49 MILLARD NORTH 38
Lincoln Southwest is getting hot at the right time, again.
The sixth seeded Silverhawks advanced to their second state semifinal in as many years with a 49-38 win over #3 Millard North Thursday evening at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Southwest (18-8) started the game on a 13-0 run and didn't look back. Senior Taytem Coleman and Junior Hannah Kelle combined for seven and six points respectively during the span. But the cushion didn't last long.
Millard North closed the first half on a 17-6 run to pull within 19-17 at halftime. Four different Mustangs helped ignite a slow offense led by six points from Kennedy McCreery.
The second half was Jaden Ferguson show. She scored 15 of her game-high 18 points during the final two frames. The Silverhawk defense held the Mustangs (23-3) scoreless from the field until Lauren West's basket with 33 seconds left.
West led Millard North with 14 points. Kelle added 15 for the Silverhawks. LSW meets Omaha Westside at 8:45pm at PBA in the second semifinal tomorrow night.
OMAHA WESTSIDE 47 LINCOLN PIUS X 41
Omaha Westside bent but never broke Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Class A girls state basketball tournament.
The Warriors (23-2) held off a stubborn Pius X team that pulled within a possession with less than a minute to go before going on to win 47-41.
Jadyn Greisen's basket pulled the Thunderbolts within 44-41 with less than a minute to go. But turnovers were the story of the game for Pius as they turned the ball over on the ensuing possession; it was one of 17.
Westside's Quinn Weidemann scored the first eight points of the game and the Warriors sprinted out to an 8-2 lead before Pius responeded with a 15-2 run themselves capped by a deuce from Lauren Taubenheim. Pius in return closed the half on a 10-2 run to lead 22-19.
Third quarter scoring didn't come easy to Pius as they were held scoreless for the 2:22 of the third frame. But Pius found themselves within 33-31 heading into the final quarter.
Weidemann had 20 of her game-high 26 points in the first half. Taubenheim finished with 15 for Pius X. The Thunderbolts finish 15-10 on the season while the Warriors face LSW in the state semifinal
