- GIRLS BASKETBALL: Top-Ranked Westside Keeps Streak Alive, Holds Off Southwest
By Jeff Motz
Omaha Westside's trio of guards (Quinn Weidemann, Caroline Leibel and Ella Wedergren) caused problems early for the Lincoln Southwest girls basketball team on Saturday evening.
But the top-ranked Warriors survived a 23-point swing from the Silver Hawks and held on for a 63-56 win at Southwest to earn their 11th-straight win and improve to 17-2.
Westside led 48-33 after three quarters. Southwest, though, kept chipping away at the Warrior lead and Westside responded almost every time.
Southwest got as close as 57-54 with 1:25 left, mainly behind the fourth quarter effort of 6-1 junior forward Hannah Kelle. She scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the final period.
But Weidemann and Wedergren each hit six free throws to seal the deal for the Warriors.
From the field, Westside hit their outside shots in the first half that allowed them to increase their lead to double-digits. The Warriors led 35-25 at the half.
Leibel led Westside with 17 points, Weidemann added 16 points and Wedergren finished with 14 points.
Taytem Coleman finished with 11 points for Southwest, who falls to 11-7 on the season.
