- BOYS BASKETBALL: Pius X Flexes Muscle, Uses Early Spurt To Upset No. 8 Links
By Jeff Motz
There was no question that Lincoln Pius X came into the home of No. 8 Lincoln High Friday night and put on a display of fundamental basketball.
The Thunderbolts had four players score in double-figures, led by Charlie Easley's 24 points to earn an 85-68 win in boys basketball at the Early Johnson Gym.
Easley and 6-2 senior guard Joe Burt, who finished with 18 points, helped spark a 12-2 start with 5:30 left in the first quarter.
Lincoln High, though, didn't back off. The Links outscored the Thunderbolts 9-4 the rest of the first quarter, which included a monster one-hand dunk from Sammy Richardson. However, Pius X led 18-11 heading to the second quarter.
The Thunderbolts (7-5) led at the half 42-29, but found themselves being challenged by the Links up-tempo transition game. On three occasions, Lincoln High trimmed the deficit to single-digits, getting as close as 52-44 late in the third quarter. A basket by Pius X forward Austin Jablonski helped steer the Thunderbolt lead back to double-digits and a 56-46 advantage.
Free throws down the stretch from Easley, Burt, Seth Pollack and Joe Dworak, who scored 14 points, helped pad the Pius X lead.
Jablonski added 10 points in the win for the Thunderbolts, who have now won their last three games.
Richardson finish with 22 points for Lincoln High, who also got help from Keyshawn Jenkins' 13 points.
