- BOYS BASKETBALL: Scoring Spurts Help North Star Shut Down Pius X
By Jeff Motz
It took two runs for Lincoln North Star to capitalize on Lincoln Pius X Friday night.
The Navigators used a 24-11 first quarter advantage and a 23-11 run in the final quarter to prevail 70-57 over the Thunderbolts at The Swamp.
While North Star (4-1) led the entire game, Pius X gave them a run for their money for much of the game. The Thunderbolts outscored the Gators 16-6 in the second quarter, after Charlie Easley hit a three before the buzzer to pull Pius to within three at halftime, 30-27.
North Star sprinted out to a 34-27 start to the third quarter and led by six heading into the final period. With 5:15 remaining in the game, Joe Burt scored from close range to pull the Thunderbolts to within one at 47-46.
But a 7-0 run from North Star proved to be the difference. Alex Goll connected on a 1-and-1 situation, then Donovan Williams scored off a steal and assist from Sam Juracek.
Juracek hit a free throw, then a basket from Goll put the Gators up 54-46 with less than four minutes remaining. North Star capitalized on their free throws, going 11 of 12 in the final two minutes of the game.
A fast break dunk from Goll put the game out of reach.
Pius X (2-3) got 20 points from Easley and 11 points from Jackson Owens.
Wiliams led the Gators with 16 points, while 6-7 senior center Brock Johnson scored 12 points and guard Luke Reimer came off the bench to score 10 points.
