- BOYS BASKETBALL: Barrett's Tip In Keeps East Perfect
By Jeff Motz
KEARNEY---Hayden Barrett's contribution toward the Class A third-ranked Lincoln East boys basketball team increased Friday night, when the Spartans needed something in a hurry against No. 2 Kearney.
The 6-2 senior scored off an offensive rebound with one second remaining to give East a 45-44 victory over the Bearcats before an estimated 1,800 fans at Kearney High School.
After a three-point play from Kearney phenom Kanon Koster, who scored a game-high 23 points, with 10 seconds left to give the Bearcats a one-point edge, East called time out to draw up a final play.
Sam Griesel, East's 6-5 senior forward and South Dakota commit, drove the right base line to try and score. His layup bounced off the rim and Barrett was on the other side for the rebound and put back.
Kearney called time out with 0.7 seconds left to set up an in-bounds play, but East guard Connor Rieckenberg swatted away the pass at mid-court to seal the win.
East (3-0) struggled out of the gate.
Griesel picked up two quick fouls and sat the rest of the first quarter into the second with only two points. Both teams, however, struggled shooting from the field, as Kearney (2-1) led 7-4 after the first quarter.
Koster scored 10 points in the first half, seven of which in the second quarter that kept the Bearcats ahead 18-14 at the half.
The turning point for East came in the third quarter when the Spartans went on a 10-0 run, where Griesel scored nine points during the run for a 32-28 lead. Griesel led East in scoring with 17 points, while Anthony Marfisi added 12 points and Jordan Janssen scored nine points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
