10/13/2017 - FOOTBALL: Big Stop At Goal Line Secures Win For Vikings

By Jeff Motz

WAVERLY---While there may have been nine touchdowns beforehand, it came down to a final second defensive stop to help the Waverly football team to a 35-28 win over Norris Friday night at Viking Stadium.

Norris had driven 65 yards to the Waverly 10-yard line with 30 seconds left in the game.  The Titans kept punching away at the Viking defense, getting down to the 3-yard line.  Facing 3rd and goal, Norris senior running back Austin Schultz received a pitch from quarterback Aidan Oerter and ran right side and stretched the ball toward the end zone, hitting the pylon and indicating he made it in.

But the officials ruled Schultz had gone out of bounds inside the 1-yard line and didn't make it in for the score.  Thus, set up the deciding 4th and goal and Oerter to sneak it in.  But the Waverly defense met him at the point of attack and stopped Oerter of clearing the goal line by inches.

Waverly (5-3) took a knee with 0.3 seconds left and earned the win.

Things seemed to be comfortable for the Vikings with 7:19 left in the game, after Rhett Jordon's 2-yard touchdown run for a 35-21 lead, before the Titans responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ruhl with 5:27 remaining.

Waverly scored on their first drive, which lasted 15 plays and 91-yards when Jordon snuck the ball into the end zone.  Norris countered early in the second quarter off a 29-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Stai.

Jordon added a two-point conversion, after he found Jay Adams on a 60-yard touchdown pass on Waverly's next possession with 8:21 left in the first half to reclaim the lead at 14-7.

A late first half drive for Norris ends when Oerter found Cade Argo on a 13-yard scoring strike with 1:02 to play.  On the ensuing kick, Waverly sophomore Ethan Kastens ran the ball back 100-yards for a touchdown with the Vikings reclaiming a 21-14 lead heading into the locker room.

Kaleb Canoyer capped an 80-yard drive with a two-yard scoring run in the third quarter that extended the Waverly lead at 27-14.  Schultz sprinted for 32-yards for a touchdown to pull Norris within striking distance at 27-21 early in the final quarter.

Jordon had 253-yards of offense, scoring twice on the run and threw for one touchdown.

Schultz had 151 yards rushing and a touchdown in the loss for Norris.
