09/22/2017 - FOOTBALL: Patriots Knock Off No. 9 Knights

By LincolnPrepSports.com Staff

Just as Lincoln Southeast rallied back to take a late third quarter lead, Millard South found a way to spoil it.

The Class A No. 9 Knights saw their six-point advantage erased with less than eight minutes left and fell for the second straight week, 35-27 to the Patriots Friday afternoon at Seacrest Field.

What caused Southeast (2-3) to fall behind early were turnovers.  The Knights committed five of them in the game, including late in the ball game.  After Millard South took a 28-27 lead off a 91-yard touchdown reception from Dylan Guinzy, Southeast took possession but quarterback Jack Strong threw an interception, picked up by Spencer Wagner.

That INT set up for an Isaiah Harris 87-yard touchdown run and extend the Patriot lead to eight.  Southeast had one more chance to get down field, but failed to convert before time ran out.

Southeast trailed 21-0 in the second quarter, but rallied back when Shea Koolen scored on a five-yard run.  Then Isaac Gifford forced a Millard South fumble, which was picked up and dropped then recovered by Southeast defensive lineman Collin Summers, who returned it for a touchdown before halftime.

The Knights tied it up at 21 in the third quarter off a nine-play drive that ended on Calvin Kyker's 4-yard touchdown run.  Going against the strong south wind, Strong threw a backwards pass to receiver Kreyton Freauf, who found Isaac Appleget on a 50-yard touchdown catch.  With the point after failing, Southeast led 27-21 with 2 minutes left in the third.

Millard South, now 3-2, has won three-straight games (all district opponents).
