- CLASS A BASEBALL: Prep Flexes Muscle, Ends LSE's Win Streak
By Jeff Motz
PAPILLION---Omaha Creighton Prep took advantage of early hits and miscues from Lincoln Southeast on Monday afternoon.
The Junior Jays wasted no time to jump ahead of the No. 1 seed Knights scoring five early runs on their way to an 11-0 run rule final in six innings in the Class A State Baseball winner's bracket semifinal at Werner Park.
Prep (21-11) moves on to the winner's bracket final Tuesday at 7pm at Fricke Field against the winner of Millard South and Millard West. Southeast (17-7) will play in the 4pm elimination game against Omaha Westside, which you can hear on LincolnMetroSports.com.
Dylan Phillips pitched a complete six-inning, two-hit shutout, while striking out five to lead the defending Class A state champion Junior Jays. Early errors proved costly for Southeast, where Prep got on the board 1-0 in the first inning when Owen Richter picked up an RBI double. Cam Blosson, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, doubled, then scored off a single from Phillips in the second inning.
Prep then scored three runs in the third inning, sparked by another error committed by Southeast shortstop Garrett Olson. That led to a bunt single from Richter, then an RBI single from Aaron Mischo and a two-run triple from Blossom.
The offensive assault continued into the fourth, where the Junior Jays got a two-run single from Mischo. Prep then added four more runs and six hits in the sixth to put the game away.
Southeast got a lead off single from Brian Meyer in the first inning, but was stagnant for much of the game. Nate Trenhaile delivered a pinch-hit single in the fifth. Southeast stranded three runners on base, all at first base.
The loss for Southeast ends a season best 14-game win streak.
