- A-2 DISTRICT BASEBALL: Sheppard's Walk-Off Single Moves Knights To District Title Game
By Jeff Motz
Plenty of drama in a game that on paper looked like it should have been a blow out.
With a runner at second with two-out and a tied ball game, Brett Sheppard stepped in and connected on an RBI single that scored Jaxson Johnson and gave Lincoln Southeast an 8-7 walk-off win over Norfolk in 9 innings in the A-2 district semifinal Friday evening at Sherman Field.
The win for Southeast (15-6) gives them their 12th-straight win and puts them in Monday's 5pm district title game with Lincoln Northeast, who went late into the night to beat Omaha Northwest 9-4 in the other semifinal.
Norfolk ends their season at 2-25. The Panthers won the play-in game earlier in the day 7-5 over Omaha North.
Southeast had a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning, before Norfolk rallied and scored three runs, forcing ace pitcher Daniel Hundley to be taken out. Before the initial Panther run, Hundley had struck out six Norfolk batters.
Southeast extended their lead to 7-3 before the Panthers rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning, eventually going extra innings.
Sheppard, who started at third base for the Knights, make a spectacular diving catch in the sixth inning. But it was him stepping up in the eighth inning as a relief pitcher that kept Norfolk from scoring again.
Aiden Bennett went 2-of-3 with two RBI doubles for Southeast, while Grant Detlefsen added a three-run double for the Knights.
