- Pius X, Kearney, Norfolk To Join HAC
By Jeff Motz
Lincoln Pius X, Kearney and Norfolk high schools applied and have been accepted to join the Heartland Athletic Conference, starting in the 2018-19 school year.
All three schools will join the conference that consists of LPS high schools East, Lincoln High, Northeast, North Star, Southeast and Southwest, along with Fremont High and Grand Island Senior High.
The last conference expansion was in 2003, when North Star opened up.
Kearney and Norfolk come to the HAC, after being longtime members of the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference, while Pius X has been a longtime independent.
“The current members of the conference are excited to add these three schools who have outstanding athletic and academic traditions,” North Star athletic director and HAC president Kevin Simmerman said in a statement Tuesday through LPS. “We look forward to the positive impact that these schools will make in an already competitive conference.”
Simmerman says all three new conference members will work out details and specifics, when it comes to tournament brackets, rotating event hosting sites, etc.
