By Jeff Motz
It took a couple of innings for Omaha Creighton Prep to finally get the bats going on Wednesday afternoon.
The Class A No. 2 Junior Jays rallied from being three runs down in the fourth inning to earning a 10-4 victory over Lincoln North Star in high school baseball at Den Hartog Field.
Prep (7-3) collected a hit in the first inning when designated hitter Dylan Phillips connected on the first of his three singles in the game off an infield bunt, but Evan Laney's fly out to centerfield left him stranded.
The Junior Jays got a pair of hits from Aaron Mischo and Drew Dunham to begin the second inning, but North Star pitcher Treyton Scully forced Owen Richter to pop out to first and struck out Noah Peyton and Zach Firmature.
North Star (3-8) got a lead off single in the bottom of the second from Luke Recker, who advanced on an error and past ball before Braden Dey struck out. Recker scored on an RBI double from Chase Lauver and after Jake Mangels' ground out, DH Cody Schweitzer singled and scored Lauver to give the Gators a 2-0 lead.
A brief rally in the 3rd for Prep resulted when Nate Reiner walked, then advanced on a Phillips bloop single to left and scored of a Mischo single, trailing North Star 2-1.
Max Mandel ran into trouble on the mound for the Jays, allowing Gavyn Leitschuck to double and walking Kaden Barnes before forcing Wade Deist to ground out to short. Recker then connected on a two-run double for a 4-1 North Star lead in the bottom of the 3rd.
The Gators got two more on base via walks allowed by relief pitcher Cooper Allen. Prep then went to the bullpen and brought in senior right-hander and UNO recruit Tommy Steier, who struck out Schweitzer to end the inning.
Prep found its stride in the fourth when Richter and Peyton reached on a double and walk respectively, then Richter scored off a single from Will Hanafan. Then a wild throw to first from Scully allowed Peyton to score, pulling the Junior Jays to within a run of the Gators, 4-3.
After Mischo and Dunham each reached on singles to start the Prep half of the fifth, the Junior Jays took the lead for good when Peyton ripped a single to right to drive in two runs for a 5-4 advantage.
With no answer from North Star, Prep scored the games final five runs over the sixth and seventh innings to earn the victory.
Steier threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing no runs, three hits and striking out five batters to earn the win. Prep also outhit North Star 15-8, while the Gators committed three errors to the one from the Junior Jays.
