04/04/2017 - BASEBALL: Pius X Gets Quick 4th Inning Rally To Edge Northeast

Lincoln Pius X managed to stay perfect on Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't easy.

The Thunderbolts rallied for their only two runs of the game in the fourth inning to edge Lincoln Northeast 2-1 in high school baseball at Den Hartog Field.

Pius X (11-0) had been held without a hit or reaching base through three innings, as Northeast pitcher Joe Richter kept hitters at bay, including three strikeouts.  The Rockets, though, went up 1-0 in the first inning when Carlos Knowles scored off an RBI single from Jacob Stewart.

With Richter dominating on the mound, Pius X found a way to break through in the top of the fourth.  Aaron Nichols singled, then advanced on a Camden Brichacek walk and then scored off an RBI single from Dane Milburn.

A past ball allowed Brichacek to score from third to give the Thunderbolts a 2-1 advantage.  From there, Pius X only got one more hit and runner on base when Brock Wordekemper doubled and was left stranded in the top of the seventh.

Northeast (4-5) picked up four more hits in their final four at-bats, but each time left runners on base.  Kole Connick hit a one-out single to shallow centerfield in the bottom of the seventh, but was forced out as part of a game-ending double play.

Derek Kolbush earned the win for Pius X by going the distance, despite allowing a run and six hits, while striking out one Northeast batter.  The Thunderbolts also overcame committing three errors that happened in the first and second innings.

Richter took the loss, striking out four Pius X hitters, allowing two runs and three hits, plus a hit batsman on base and not allowing any walks.
