03/23/2017 - BASEBALL: East Shuts Down Lincoln High's Early Momentum For Victory

By Jeff Motz

Lincoln High came out swinging, but Lincoln East managed to spoil that with good fielding and capitalizing on miscues.

The Spartans took charge in the second inning and pulled away for a 5-1 win Thursday afternoon in high school baseball at Sherman Field.

Initially, the Links got a lead off single from De'Angelo Sommers and a base hit from Wyatt Vivier.  Sommers scored on a sac fly to right field from Bobby Mercier for a 1-0 advantage.

Then things turned south for Lincoln High.

After recording a strike out to start the second inning, pitcher Cameron Wynne walked East hitters Noah Makovicka and Rece Snyder.  Wynne tried to work a pick off move to first, but a bad throw allowed both runners to score to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans got two more runs in the fourth, when Makovicka got on base off a throwing error from Vivier, then scored when Snyder got on base off an error from Link second-baseman CJ Jones.  Snyder scored off a sac bunt from Brandon Goodyear.  In the same inning, East's first hit of the game came from an infield single from Jared Vogt.

Five errors were committed by Lincoln High in the game versus East's two, which came in the first and sixth innings.

While East was scoring runs off of Lincoln High errors, the Spartans still struggled to hit the ball against the Links pitchers.  Wynne and Mercier combined to record 10 strikeouts for Lincoln High, who outhit the Spartans 4-3 in the game.

East's final run came in the sixth inning when Alex Hrnicek hit an RBI single, scoring Logan Borgmeyer.

Lincoln High tried to rally in the seventh with Wynne and pinch hitter Garrett Brockman reaching on back to back walks.  After Zackary Heiden struck out, Sommers hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
