By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---The bats may not have been hot for Waverly early, but taking advantage of pitching miscues from Lincoln Northeast allowed the Class B No. 6 Vikings to capitalize and earn a 7-2 win in the season opener for both teams Thursday at Lawson Park.
Waverly (1-0) got their first run in the bottom of the first when Rylan Gubbels scored on a bases loaded walk. In the second, the Vikings tacked on two more runs, after Rhett Jordan's sac fly to center scored Nolan Brown. Gubbels then scored again from third after Northeast pitcher Joe Richter was called for a balk for a 3-0 Viking lead.
The Rockets, who are unranked in Class A and fell to 0-1, outhit the Vikings through 4 1/2 innings , 4-0, after Caden Highsmith delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Richter, trimming the Northeast deficit to 3-1.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Waverly finally got two hits and scored three more runs, sparked by a Drew Wells RBI single, then Josh Dauel connected on a two-run single for a 6-1 lead.
Northeast countered in the sixth, with Sam Steinmeyer's RBI double but managed to leave the bases stranded. Waverly tacked on their final run when Jay Adams hit an RBI triple into the right centerfield gap.
Alex Clifton got the win for Waverly, going four innings , allowing one run, two hits and striking out three hitters. Richter took the loss, after going three innings, allowing three runs and striking out three batters.
Northeast outhit Waverly 5-to-4, with Highsmith, Steinmeyer, Talon Little, Josh Seifert and Carlos Knowles each collecting hits.
