- CLASS A BOYS BASKETBALL: Strong 2nd Quarter Helps Packers In Win Over Thunderbolts
By Kellan Heavican
Omaha South’s strong second quarter proved to be too much for Lincoln Pius X in the first round of the Class A State Tournament Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Packers took down the Bolts 67-54.
After a slow first quarter, which featured only two field goals for Pius, one from Michael Lewandowski and TJ Hansen, the Packers surged ahead. Omaha South (19-6) outscored Pius 22-5 rolling to a 31-17 halftime lead.
The lead grew to as many as 22 in the fourth quarter before Pius began to chip away. Hansen’s long range shooting caught fire as he hit four of his six threes in the final frame. He started a spurt that would cut the lead to 12.
Hansen was aided by teammates Joe Burt and Jack Easley whose deep three cut the Packer lead to 60-48 with 90 seconds reaming. However, Tahj Glover scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the final frame to stymie the Thunderbolts (20-4).
Hansen led all scorers with 21 and Burt added 11. In addition to Glover, Aguek Arop paced Omaha South with 14. Omaha South advances to the semifinals to face Norfolk tomorrow night at 8:45.
