- CLASS D2 BOYS BASKETBALL: Wieseler's 24 Helps Wynot Shock Parkview Christian
By Jeff Motz
For much of the game, it belonged to Wynot.
But after a Parkview Christian comeback, the Blue Devils turned to their top scorer, Jalen Wieseler, who got a game-high 24 points, including a pivotal three-pointer to help in a 39-34 upset of the Patriots Thursday night in the Class D2 quarterfinal at Lincoln East.
After a brief tie at 11 in the early part of the second quarter, Wynot went on an 11-0 run, sparked by Wieseler with his 15 first-half points.
Wynot (18-6) led 30-18 late in the third quarter, before the Parkview Christian rattled off 13 straight points to take command 31-30 off of Nosa Iyagbaye's basket with 4:12 in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils ran some time off, then Wieseler's lead-changing three-pointer came with 2:55 left. Wynot led 36-31 when Dawson Sudbeck hit a three, then got two free throws from Wieseler and another from Lucas Thingstad to seal the win.
For Parkview Christian (21-5), it marked the first loss to a Class D2 team all season. The Patriots lost games to Gretna (Class B) Nebraska City Lourdes (Class D1) and Boys Town and Lincoln Lutheran (Class C1).
Henry Tanksley led the Patriots in the loss with 18 points, while Iyagbaye added 14. Tucker Pinyon, who averages just shy of 11 points a game, only scored two for Parkview.
