- BOYS DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Rockets Survive Late Scare From Titans To Advance To Monday Final
By Kellan Heavican
Lincoln Northeast survived a late run from Papillion La-Vista South and went on to win 61-49 in the Boys A-4 basketball semifinal Saturday night at the Ed Johnson Gym.
Up by nine entering the second half, the Rockets (14-10) used an 8-3 run sparked by two Noah Thompson buckets that built a 31-17 lead. Then they used a 10-4 run to open the final frame sparked from a three pointer from Nate White and a two baskets from Malcolm Whitlow.
Northeast’s lead grew to 19 after a Talon Little three with 5:15 left. The Titans recognized time was running out on their season. In a span of 90 seconds, Papio South went on an 11-2 run after a one-handed slam from Toug Dol.
Then with a minute left and a 55-47 score, Isaac Simpson launched a long-range three that would’ve cut the Rocket lead to five, but the three clanked off the heal. The Rockets would then proceed to go six of six from the foul line to seal the win.
Whitlow continued his impressive sophomore season ending with a game-high 19 points. Thompson added 14, while White and Little both tallied 12. Dol and Ryan Daughtery finished with 15.
Northeast moves onto the District A-4 Championship and will travel to Kearney to face the Bearcats. Both teams have beaten each other this season and tipoff is set for 7 pm.
