- GIRLS DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Rockets Win A-1 Title, Earn No. 1 Seed At State
By Kellan Heavican
Lincoln Northeast’s strong fourth-quarter run lifted them to the District A-1 Championship on Thursday evening at the Ed Johnson Gym by defeating Papillion-LaVista 66-49.
After entering the fourth quarter up by eight, Azaiya Trainor sparked the Rockets behind seven points an assist to Nigeria Jones that capped a 9-0 run. Papio had no answer and found themselves trailing 52-36.
However, things were much tighter in the first half. LNE (24-2) started the game trailing 6-0, but responded with a 17-3 run to end the first and start the second quarter. McKenna Minter helped ignite the Rockets by scoring four timely buckets.
The Monarchs responded by using a 12-4 run themselves behind back-to-back three-point plays from Josey Ryan and a basket from Hannah McCarville. The run cut the Rocket lead to 23-21 at halftime.
The Rocket defense and their speed on offense were too much for the Monarchs (12-13) who only scored six field goals in the second half. That difference led to a 43-28 scoring margin in the second half.
Minter finished with a game-high 21 points and Trainor added 11. Ryan led the Monarchs with 15. The Rockets return to the state tournament after a one-year hiatus. Opening round of the 2017 state tournament begins on Thursday, March 2nd.
