- BOYS BASKETBALL: White's Spark Helps Northeast Fend Off Fremont
By Jeff Motz
Nate White has proven time and time again he's not afraid of attacking the basket or hitting a clutch three when needed.
The 5-10 Lincoln Northeast junior guard scored a team-high 24 points, 12 of those in a pivotal fourth quarter, to help the Rockets to a 76-65 win over Fremont on Senior Night Saturday at the Ed Johnson Gym.
Northeast (13-10) led 58-53 with 4:50 left when White drove in for a reverse layup. Then Fremont answered with a basket from Riley Harms, who also scored 24 points.
Northeast extended the lead back to five with a three-pointer from Talon Little. But a pair of free throws from Nolan Dillon and a three-pointer from Cade Niehaus pulled Fremont back to within one, 61-60 with 3:33 left.
The Rockets finished the game on a 15-5 run, sparked by a Malcolm Whitlow basket. White sank six free throws during the stretch, plus scoring another field goal, while Whitlow added another basket and Little added a three-pointer.
Northeast and Fremont were tied at 34 at the break and the Rockets held a 54-52 edge through three periods.
Whitlow added 18 points for Northeast and Noah Thompson scored 13 points to help the Rockets. Dillon added 17 points for the Tigers, who finished the regular season at 9-14.
