Lincoln East and Lincoln High didn't want to quit playing basketball Friday night.

Neither boys team wanted to give in to the other, but it was a late surge from the Spartans in the second overtime that forced a third and decisive overtime, coming away with an 87-82 victory over the Links at the East Gym.

The win gave the Spartans their first city championship since 2004.

Sam Griesel became the hero for Class A No. 5 East in the second overtime, scoring a layup and hitting a free-throw as part of a three-point play to tie the game at 75.  He finished with 28 points, while teammate Jordan Janssen scored a game-high 33 points.

Lincoln High couldn't covert on a final shot attempt, which forced the third overtime.

Griesel then scored two quick baskets for a 79-75 Spartan lead a minute into the final overtime frame.  Lincoln High got as close as 85-82 but Hunter McPhail sealed the East win with a pair of free throws with less than 8 seconds left.

The Spartans had a 31-27 halftime lead, but the Links sparked a furious rally in the third quarter and held a 48-47 lead before being tied at 59 at the end of regulation and 63 going into the second overtime.

Part of Lincoln High's comeback was due to Morgan Perry, who finished with a team-high 22 points.  Nine of his points came during the Links' pivotal third and fourth quarter spurt.

Jaylin Bradley added 19 points, while Sammy Richardson finished with 17 points in the loss.
