- BOYS BASKETBALL: Free Throws Key In Northeast Win Over Pius X
By Jeff Motz
Free throws were a solid factor in Lincoln Northeast's 71-66 boys basketball victory over Lincoln Pius X Friday night at Bishop Flavin Gym.
The Rockets made 22-of-34 free throws, 14-of-21 in the second half, which helped in overcoming a 34-27 halftime deficit.
Northeast (9-7) used a 21-9 third quarter run to take control, with Malcolm Whitlow scoring 12 of his game-high 31 points during the spurt. That included a buzzer-beating three-pointer for a 48-43 lead.
Nate White, the junior point guard for the Rockets, scored 14 points in the win, including a three-pointer that extended the lead to 61-51 with 3:12 remaining. Pius X rallied back on back to back baskets from Jack Easley, to trim the deficit to five with 1:32 left.
Northeast sank seven straight free throws and led by as much as 69-66, after Pius X got a three from Easley with 1.8 seconds left. An inbounds baseball pass from Talon Little to Whitlow led to the final basket as time ran out.
Trace Tupper, Northeast's 6-9 senior center, scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had five blocks. Pius X was led by Charlie Easley's 21 points, while Mike Lewandowski added 12 points before fouling out for the Thunderbolts, who fell to 10-2.
