- GIRLS BASKETBALL: Strong Second Half Boosts Rockets Over Silver Hawks
By Jeff Motz
Tough defense, combined with a good transition game and half-court offense helped the No. 2 Lincoln Northeast girls basketball team to pull away in the second half on Saturday night for a 52-35 win over No. 3 Lincoln Southwest at the Ed Johnson Gym.
The Rockets used a zone-trap defense in the half-court, which contributed to 23 Silver Hawk turnovers in the game.
Northeast (14-1) held a 27-21 halftime lead before McKenna Minter helped the Rockets pull away in the third quarter. Minter scored six of her 10 points in the period to put Northeast up 41-29.
Minter helped contribute in the fourth quarter, which saw Northeast build up it's lead to 51-30 with less than four minutes left.
The Rockets held all Silver Hawk scorers under double-digits, as sophomore center Hannah Kelle led Southwest with nine points.
Alabama A&M recruit Nigeria Jones and sophomore Kambree Rhodes each led Northeast with 12 points. Jones had to leave during the third quarter with a lower back injury, but returned to play in the fourth quarter.
Rhodes hit all of her shots from three-point range, which helped in Northeast's second quarter rally.
