12/30/2016 - BOYS BASKETBALL: East Survives Scare From Lincoln High

By Kellan Heavican

Lincoln East saw an 18-point second quarter lead shrink to five, pushed it back to as many in the second half for a 62-54 win over Lincoln High in the semifinals of the Heartland Athletic Conference boys basketball tournament on Friday evening at North Star.

The Spartans (5-2) advance to Saturday’s HAC final to face Lincoln Northeast.  Behind nine first quarter points from Sam Greisel, East sprinted out to an 18 point lead.  Lincoln High finally caught fire thanks to Jaylin Hunter scoring 9 of his 11 points during a run that cut the Spartan lead to 5.

Pete Ackerman drilled a three right before the half-time buzzer stretching the lead back to 8.  East continued to dictate the tempo in the second-half behind Hunter McPhail who finished with 11.

Lincoln High saw the deficit reach 18 again, but cut the lead to single digits with: 36 left after Frazzie Wynn’s layup.  Sammy Richardson and Hunter both tallied 11 for the Links.

Ackerman aided East with 10 points. .
