- BOYS BASKETBALL: Rockets Go Two Overtimes To Beat Knights
By Kellan Heavican
It looked like the door was closed not once but twice for the Lincoln Northeast boys basketball team.
Then Malcolm Whitlow propped it right back open behind his 31-point performance and the Rockets withstood two 11-point deficits enroute to a 75-74 double overtime win over Lincoln Southeast in the semifinals of the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at Lincoln North Star.
Northeast (6-2) now faces Lincoln East in the championship game Saturday at 2:15pm, after the Spartans beat Lincoln High 62-54 in the other semifinal game.
Northeast rallied for their first lead in the fourth quarter, but Southeast's Sherrod Davison drilled a 3 with :57 seconds left to take a 1 point lead in regulation. Whitlow responded by adding a free-throw to tie the game at 65 with half a minute left. Davison had another chance with less than 10 seconds left to seal the win but missed both foul shots.
In the first overtime, Isaiah Curry drilled a three but Northeast’s Nguy Thoat answered and Southeast had the ball with :18 left but did find a clean look. Curry finished with 16 and Thoat had 11.
Trace Tupper sealed the game with 4 of his 13 points in the second overtime and a Michael Anderson basket brought the game back to one after two missed free-throws from Noah Thompson. The final shot from Isaiah Curry fell short before the buzzer.
Brayden Day led Southeast with 22 points and Curry finished with 16. The Knights fall to 3-5 and will play in the third place game against Lincoln High Saturday afternoon at 12:30.
