- BOYS BASKETBALL: Mustangs Escape With Win Over Silver Hawks
By Jeff Motz
Millard North came back down to Lincoln a week after edging Lincoln East in a nail-biter and had a battle on their hands with Lincoln Southwest Saturday night.
The Mustangs rallied for a 9-2 run in the fourth quarter and got a basket late from Nick Ferrarini to earn a 50-49 win over the Silver Hawks in boys basketball at Southwest High School.
Southwest took off to an 8-0 run when Trevor Bogle hit a three pointer with 1:05 left in the third quarter. Bogle then added another three to start the fourth quarter and Jaquaylon Mays added a steal and layup for a 43-35 Silver Hawk lead with 7:25 to play.
Millard North (4-0) responded with the 9-2 run, started by Telo Kang's layup. Senior center Carter Larsen added two free throws. Mays added a basket for LSW, then the Mustangs got a three-pointer from Bret Porter and Larsen scored on the next possession to put Millard North within striking distance, trailing 45-44 with 3 minutes left.
Porter added another three to put the Mustangs up 47-45 with 1:50 to play, but Southwest answered with two free throws from Mays with 1:34 left.
Southwest had a chance to take the lead, but a missed one-and-one attempt from Cam Frederick resulted in a foul from Caden McCormick. That led to a Khor Thok free throw for Millard North, but Ferrarini committed a foul on the missed bonus attempt.
Jacob Dowd sank two free throws for a 49-48 LSW lead before Ferrarini's game winning layup. Southwest had two chances to score with under 10 seconds left, but both missed right before the buzzer.
Larson led Millard North with 16 points, while Porter added 14 points and Ferrarini had 11 in the win. Bogle led the Silver Hawks with a game-high 17 points on 50 percent shooting from the field. Mays added 16 points in the Southwest loss.
