11/04/2016 - CLASS A FOOTBALL: Makovicka Comes Through For East High In Upset of Burke

By Jeff Motz

OMAHA---Two big plays put Lincoln East in the driver's seat thanks to Josh Makovicka.

A pick six from 25 yards out and a 76-yard touchdown reception from the senior helped the Spartans to a 27-24 upset of No. 5 Omaha Burke Friday night in the Class A state football quarterfinals at Burke Stadium and will play in the Class A semifinals at Omaha North next week.

Makovicka's 76-yard reception gave East the lead for good with 3:11 left in the second quarter for a 17-10 lead.

Then with 11:09 left in the third quarter, Makovicka intercepted a Tyler Chadwick pass to put the Spartans ahead 24-10.  Burke responded with a scoring strike from running back James Burks, who ran for 24-yards to closed the Bulldogs deficit to 24-17.

Burke (8-3) then tried to go for a 49-yard field goal, but Cole Frahm's attempt was blocked by East lineman and University of Wyoming recruit Chris Walker.  That eventually set up a 38-yard field goal from John Hansen and the Spartan lead grew to 27-17.

The Bulldogs got a touchdown with 3:37 left, when Chadwick threw a screen pass to AP Ponder for a 47-yard scoring strike.

East (7-4) couldn't extend their final drive and after being forced to punt, Burke took command and had chances to get within field goal range.  The final play of the game ended when Noah Makovicka hit Ponder for a 1-yard loss as time ran out.

East quarterback Carson Walters threw for 124 yards and racked up 119 on the ground, including running for one touchdown (a 1-yard run).  John Hansen nailed field goals of 25-yards and 38-yards out.
