- FOOTBALL: Knights Battle Hard To Road Win
By Kellan Heavican
GRAND ISLAND---Lincoln Southeast overcame a slow offense, leaned on their defense, and came back from a first quarter deficit to beat Grand Island at Memorial Stadium Friday night 27-20.
Even though the Knights intercepted Islander quarterback Tyler Kress four times in the first half, their first score came in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run from Calvin Kyker. The PAT was no good and Grand Island led 7-6.
After a Brian Covarrubias 40-yard field goal for Grand Island, Jampe Gergen found Brian Meyer for a 40-yard touchdown pass (PAT failed) before half; LSE led 13-10.On the opening possession of the second half, Gergenthrew his second touchdown pass to Dylan McGinn from 19 yards away and the Knights led 19-10. The score capped a 5-play 80-yard drive.
The Islanders then used a 10-play 62-yard drive capped by a Will Nordhues 3-yard touchdown reception to cut the Knight lead to 2. The Islanders forced a punt and then regained the lead on a Covarrubias 33-yard field goal that capped a 13-play 57-yard drive. Grand Island led 20-19 with 7:49 left in the game.
42 seconds later the Knights reached into their bag of tricks and pulled out a double pass that scored Severyn Foster on a 63-yard touchdown reception. The two-point conversion was good and LSE led 27-20 with 7:07 left. Grand Island had one more chance on 4th down with less than 35 seconds left, but Kress’s pass fell incomplete.
After finishing 2-7 last year, the Knights finished the regular season 8-1 and will host a playoff game next Friday. The Islands felt to 6-3 but also made the playoffs.
