By Jeff Motz
Lincoln East utilized it's ground attack right away Friday night and had a big defensive stop late against Lincoln Pius X.
The Spartans earned a 14-6 victory at Vince Aldrich Field to give them one more shot of getting a win to advance to the Class A playoffs.
East (4-4) struck first on the opening drive of the game when Max White raced 51-yards around right side for a touchdown. Grady Greenwood would score the only other Spartan touchdown of the game, with a two-yard run to cap an 88-yard drive with 4:19 left in the second quarter and extend the lead to 14-0.
Pius X (5-3) finally cracked the scoreboard off a 36-yard field goal from Jacob Bunz within the first two minutes of the third quarter. Just 7:00 left in the game, the Thunderbolts got a break when Thomas Robertson found wide receiver Joe Dworak on a 68-yard pass to the East 16-yard line. Three plays later, Pius X had the ball at the Spartan 3-yard line.
After failed attempts to reach the end zone from Robertson and running back Brock Wordekemper, Pius X settled for a 19-yard field goal from Bunz.
East had the ball for the final 4:46 of the game and managed to run the clock out by getting four first downs, capped by quarterback Carson Walters taking a knee with 20 seconds left.
Walters ran the ball for 131 yards, while White gained 134 yards on the ground with a touchdown. East had 292 yards rushing, compared to Pius X 96 yards.
