- FOOTBALL: Crusaders Offense Dominates Bluejays
By Jeff Motz
Right out of the gate, Lincoln Christian wasted no time getting their offense going against Ashland-Greenwood.
The Crusaders counted on an opening drive strike and a long touchdown reception on the following possession to hold off the Bluejays 43-14 Friday night at Abel Stadium.
Christian (2-5) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Treyson Bigler, capping a five-play, 80-yard opening drive for a 6-0 lead with 11:21 in the first quarter. The next Crusader drive was capped on a 56-yard touchdown pass to Alex Schreiner and a Joe Dvorak 2-point conversion for a 14-0 lead with 6:44 left in the 1st.
A mix of passing and running the ball helped the Crusaders cap a short 49-yard drive with 10:08 left in the second quarter on a 3-yard scoring run from Dvorak. The 2-point conversion failed, but Christian led 20-0.
Ashland-Greenwood (2-4) seemed to find new life to start the third quarter. Running back Trevor Nichelson scored on a 35-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half. But Christian returned the favor when Bigler scored again from a yard out.
Bluejays quarterback Gabe Lyons broke through tackles to score from 38-yards out, still trailing 28-14 with less than three minutes left in the quarter.
After that, Christian capitalized on Ashland-Greenwood penalties and managed to mix the rush with passing. Faced with a 4th and 9 with less than six minutes left, Alex Schreiner caught a 14-yard touchdown pass and Joe Dvorak broke free from an option play and went 76-yards to seal the win.
Bigler was 22-of-29 passing for 339 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 86 yards and two scoring runs. Dworak ran 17 ties for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Reid Houchin caught the ball 11 times for 180 yards and Schreiner had nine catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
