By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---Class B No. 2 ranked Elkhorn got off to a smooth start, but stumbled through early penalties and took off strong in the second half to earn a 34-10 victory over Waverly Friday night at Viking Stadium.
Trey Sachs scored on an 11-yard touchdown run to cap Elkhorn's initial 89-yard drive for a 7-0 first quarter lead. Many procedure penalties limited two Antler drives in the first half, ranging from holding calls to false starts.
Waverly (2-4) got on the scoreboard with 49 seconds left in the second quarter on a 42-yard field goal from Caleb Nielsen, which saw the Vikings trail 7-3.
After regrouping, Elkhorn (6-0) exploded out of the gate and capped off a quick 89-yard drive when Sachs broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run, then quarterback Dillon Schutte used a sneak play from a yard out to extend the Antler lead at 21-3.
On the ensuing kick, Waverly's Reece Kroger sprinted 80-yards for a touchdown and the Vikings trailed 21-10 with 4:27 left in the third quarter.
But Elkhorn got another touchdown run from Sachs, this time a two-yard run and put the game away with 10:54 remaining in the game when fullback Adin Stiles ran in from 10-yards out.
Elkhorn's ground game got 176 yards out of Sachs and another 77 yards from Stiles.
