Lincoln High may be a football program that's on the rise.
The Links shook off some early miscues Friday night and used a 35-point third quarter to earn a 55-24 win over North Platte.
I say the program is on the rise because of the number of talent sophomores on the team that had valuable minutes and keyed an offense of major scoring drives.
Cedric Case, for one, is a quarterback that will continue to improve. At times Friday night, he looked like a veteran quarterback and completed swing passes that resulted in 53 and 75 yard touchdown receptions to senior Caleb Brown.
Case and fellow sophomore Frazzie Wynn are just two examples of the sophomore talent that could be major factors of Lincoln High being a potential playoff team. Wynn even had a touchdown run Friday night from 34-yards out as he continue to work his way through the tackles and outside routes.
Dajon Thomas is another force in the Lincoln High backfield.
Jackson Mallory continues to provide senior leadership as a quarterback and kicker. Ethan Bruha and Jack Buchanan are guys on the defensive side that are able to get to the point of attack.
Making the playoffs would be the first step for Head Coach Mark Macke, who is continuing to build up a program that's been going through hard times. If the Links don't make it this year, I would likely favor them for next year.
GAMES THIS WEEK
Lincoln Pius X and Lincoln Southeast Friday night at 7pm may be a game to catch at Seacrest Field. The Thunderbolts are undefeated and going up against the Knights, who are 4-1, may be their biggest challenge yet.
Pius X has managed to stay perfect against North Star, Lincoln High, Millard South, Papillion-LaVista and Bellevue East. Southeast's only setback was to Omaha North (42-0 loss), but that may soon be a distant memory for the Knights.
This game could ultimately determine the city championship.
Elkhorn at Waverly in Class B is another matchup this week that's on upset alert. The Antlers are a rugged 5-0 and go to Waverly, who surprisingly fell at Nebraska City 6-0. The Vikings have a chip on their shoulder and look to play a competitive game on Friday night. One game you may not want to miss.
Lincoln High at Omaha Central is another game which could mark the turning point in the Links' season. Central has fallen below expectations but still very capable of making a late season run, like Lincoln High. It's a game we're considering to carry here on LincolnPrepSports.com.
Omaha North at Lincoln East. This will be East's biggest challenge of the season. The Spartans need to utilize their running game on offense and defensively, be able to contain Jordan Strong from getting big gains.
