By Jeff Motz
Kearney shook off a slow start and all it took were two interceptions in the second quarter.
The No. 6 Bearcats answered and rallied to beat Lincoln Northeast 44-14 at the Beechner Athletic Complex at Lincoln High.
The Rockets jumped out to a 7-3 first quarter lead, after quarterback Talon Little rallied Northeast ahead on a 6-yard touchdown run. But Kearney's Noah Arrendondo picked off a pass from Little and set up a 25-yard drive capped on a three-yard touchdown run from quarterback Kanon Koster early in the second quarter for a 10-7 lead.
Northeast got down to the Kearney 18 on the next drive, but Ryan Koski intercepted a pass from Little and capped a 70-yard drive with a 5-yard scoring run from Nate Berg for a 17-7 lead with 7:12 to play in the first half.
Kearney (4-0) led 24-7 at halftime after Noah Urbanek scored on a 2-yard run with 2:21 left in the second quarter. A 64-yard touchdown pass to Berg with 9:45 in the 3rd quarter put the Bearcats ahead 31-7. Berg scored one more time with 5:02 in the 3rd on another short run.
Little scored his second touchdown with 2:18 in the quarter with Northeast trailing 38-14. Kearney's Ben Dinkel scored on a 5-yard run that put the game away.
