09/09/2016 - FOOTBALL: Southeast Wins Defensive Struggle Over East High

By Jeff Motz

Lincoln Southeast's defense stepped up at the right time when Lincoln East's momentum was starting to flourish.

The Class A 8th-ranked Knights were able stop a late drive by the Spartans and hold on for a 17-14 victory before 4,098 fans Friday night at Seacrest Field.

East rallied after Carson Walters threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Bargen, then a 2-point conversion from Alex Hrnicek with 3:49 left in the game, pulling the Spartans to within a field goal.  The Spartans forced the Knights into a three-and-out.

With 2:39 to play, East mounted a drive which was helped two pass plays from Walters to Noah Makovicka and a 15-yard late hit penalty against Southeast's Ethan York put the ball at the Knights' 29-yard line.

The Spartans (1-2) suffered a loss of yards when Walters was sacked by Southeast's Bryson Williams and Dylan McGinn.  With 52 seconds left, Walters' pass to receiver Josh Makovicka went through his hands on a leaping attempt and fell incomplete.

Southeast (3-0) set up in victory formation twice to seal the win.

East scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Walters to Noah Makovicka with seven seconds left in the first quarter, but Southeast's Nick Rosenthal blocked the point after try with the Spartans leading 6-0.

Southeast got on the scoreboard with 55 seconds before halftime, when Jack Strong scored on a 4-yard run to cap a 76-yard drive.  The Knights extended their lead in the third quarter to 14-6, when Sterling Smith caught a swing pass from Strong and ran 40-yards for the touchdown.

Aidan Bennett then kicked a 29-yard field goal with 5:40 left in the game for a 17-6 Southeast lead.

Offensively, Southeast got 138 yards passing from Strong and running back Kipp Hergenrader ran for 98 yards. Walters had 284 yards of total offense, with 199 of those threw the air for East.
