09/05/2016 - From The Press Box: Shaking Up The Top Ten And The Central Plains

You can't blame the shake up in the football top ten this week for the earthquake that rattled as far north as Nebraska over the weekend.

Great games and blowouts made for change in the Union Bank Football Top Ten this week.

Omaha North, Bellevue West, Kearney, Omaha Burke and Lincoln Southeast remain as the undefeated teams in the Class A top ten.  Lincoln Pius X, though, is a contender after winning against Lincoln North Star and Lincoln High.

Southeast, who took care of Lincoln Southwest 41-24 Friday night, ultimately proved they are back as a program after three tough seasons.  Jack Strong, the junior quarterback who started as a freshman and sophomore, looked very impressive than ever.  His 64-yard touchdown run in the second quarter made him look like Eric Crouch breaking free for a 90-plus yard run.

Kipp Hergenrader is a tough running back and Sterling Smith at 6-3, 215 pounds is a solid fullback.  Southeast will be tough to handle, but have a test ahead of them Friday night when they play Lincoln East.

The Spartans are coming off of a 20-17 overtime loss at No. 5 Kearney and may be motivated enough from that road trip to give the Knights a challenge.  Friday's game could determine ultimately who could rise toward winning the city championship.

TREMORS RATTLE NEBRASKA

Saturday morning's earthquake west of Tulsa, Oklahoma could be felt as far north as Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois.

I was still in bed and totally oblivious to what happened until my wife yelled for me and my phone started ringing.  It may be a once in a lifetime opportunity that I missed out on, unless I'm out in California or down by the New Madrid fault line in Missouri.

PLUG FOR POINT AFTER SHOW

Just a reminder, we're doing the Chick-Fil-A Point After each Saturday morning at 9am on LincolnMetroSports.com channel 3 during the football season.

John Harris, Kellan Heavican, Matt Rigby, Michael Dixon, Tony Chapman, Dick Janda and Thom Corritore will be on each week with yours truly to provide a "roundtable" discussion and recap of football games from the night before.

Make sure you log on and listen.  If you're tailgating for Nebraska football or running errands, take us with you to get caught up on what happened with all of the Friday night football action.
