- FOOTBALL: Knights Strike Fast, End Losing Streak To Silver Hawks
By Jeff Motz
The team that showed up wearing white, black and gold Friday night looked like the Lincoln Southeast of old.
The Knights struck first and often in their 41-24 victory over Lincoln Southwest before 6,214 fans at Seacrest Field.
Southeast (2-0) didn't waste time on their first drive, which went 88-yards and ended on a 1-yard touchdown run from running back Kipp Hergenrader. After Nick Rosenthal intercepted a Graham Garvin pass, Southeast marched only 37 yards and set up another Hergenrader touchdown run for a 14-0 first quarter lead.
The Knights found themselves up 21-0 with 3:27 remaining, after quarterback Jack Strong scored on a sneak play. Southwest countered with a 21-yard touchdown run from Garvin at the end of the quarter, trailing 21-7.
Then Strong broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run of his own to extend the Southeast lead to 27-7 with 10:26 left in the half. The Knights managed to extend their lead to 34-10 at halftime.
By the end of the first half, Southeast had 332 yards of offense to Southwest's 120. Defensively, the Knights picked off Garvin four times.
