05/14/2016 - CLASS A BASEBALL: Southeast Beats Grand Island, Via Walk-Off Walk

Lincoln Southeast got a spark in the fifth inning and found a way to capitalize Saturday night over Grand Island.

The Knights got a solo home run from Brock Olson in a crucial 5th inning and younger brother Garrett Olson drew a walk-off walk in the 7th inning to earn a 6-5 victory in the Class A state baseball tournament at Sherman Field.

Southeast now plays Millard West in the 4pm Monday winner's bracket quarterfinals at Haymarket Park.

Brock Olson's home run in the 5th pulled Southeast to within a run, then Nate Trenhaile doubled, then scored on a wild pitch that tied the game at five apiece.  The Knights brought in their fourth pitcher of the game, senior lefty and Nebraska recruit Connor Curry, who struck out five of seven batters he faced and earned the win.  Curry got help on an unassisted play in the seventh at first by Luke Johnson, after he gave up a two-out triple to Grand Island's Matt Lamb in the sixth.

Brock Olson led off the Southeast half of the 7th with a hit-by-pitch, then Trenhaile reached on an error by Grand Island relief pitcher Gavin Gragg, who couldn't complete a play to first base.  Brett Sheppard's sacrifice bunt advanced Olson and Trenhaile to second and third, while pinch-hitter Brendan Roberson was intentionally walked.

Brock Olson was thrown out on a force out at home plate and Crew Charleton reached on a fielder's choice, setting up Garrett Olson's two-out walk and scoring Trenhaile for the win.

Southeast went up 3-0 in the first inning, when Trenhaile hit a two-run double, then Sheppard reached on an error and Curry scored from third.  Grand Island responded with Brendan Barnes scoring a ground out in the second and Barnes drove in a run of a single in the third.

A couple of Southeast errors in the fourth helped Grand Island rally for a one-run lead, then Blake Coen reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced on a single from Shay Schanaman for a 5-3 lead in the fifth.

The loss for the Islanders marked the third one this season to the Knights.  Grand Island lost at home 4-3 in the regular season matchup, then fell in the semifinals of the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament 6-5.

Grand Island now plays Lincoln Northeast in Monday's 4pm elimination game at Sherman Field, which you can hear on LincolnPrepSports.com.
