- DISTRICT BASEBALL: SILVER HAWKS BACK AT STATE WITH WIN OVER GATORS
By Jeff Motz
Dylan Umbenhower's pitching and a big hit in the first inning from Max McGuire helped carry Lincoln Southwest to another district baseball title Saturday afternoon.
The Silver Hawks got up early and kept Lincoln North Star quiet to earn a 6-0 victory and the A-3 district championship at Sherman Field.
Jared Jesske singled, then Isaiah Peterson walked with two out in the top of the first inning, then McGuire's two-run double scored both of them to put Southwest up 2-0.
From there, Umbenhower took care of business on the mound. Through six and a third innings, he struck out six batters, allowed two walks and allowed three hits before he left early in the seventh. Umbenhower was hit in his leg by a comeback hit by Wade Deist. Amazingly, Umbenhower was able to record the out by throwing to first and dropped to the ground.
Senior Marcus Recker came in to get the final two outs, one which was a hit from Jon Opfer to right field, picked up by Peterson, who threw to first to get the second out. Recker then covered first on a ground ball hit to Tyler Burgason to seal the win.
Southwest got a run in the fifth off an RBI single from Texas A&M recruit Logan Foster, then added a couple of more runs in the sixth. McGuire was hit by a pitch and his courtesy runner Jared Ladd scored off an RBI single from sophomore Grant Bohling. Logan Sartori followed that with an RBI single.
The Silver Hawks got one more run in the seventh, after a McGuire walk and Ladd courtesy running for him scored on a Skye Harnly single.
