By Jeff Motz
Wyatt Divis was able to shine through a rough start Monday afternoon.
The Lincoln Northeast senior pitched an entire game, allowing a run and two hits, while striking out five batters. He then went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored in a 3-1 victory over Lincoln East at Sherman Field.
Divis got into an early jam when third baseman Tom Burbach committed an error, allowing East's lead-off hitter Luke O'Neill reach base. Keaton Johnson then singled, but Divis managed to get help stop the Spartans from gaining control.
Dylan Fitzgerald was retired via groundout, the O'Neill was thrown out on a force out at home and David Morris grounded out on an unassisted play at first base to end the Spartan half of the first. Divis was left stranded in the Northeast half of the first inning, after reaching on a single.
East (8-12) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, after Max White reached on another Burbach error, then advanced when Divis committed an error on a bad throw to first on a pick off move. Johnson's sac fly to left field scored White from third.
Northeast (14-6) rallied in the bottom of the third when Divis walked and advanced to third of a Brody Pappas single. Talon Little delivered an RBI single to
score Divis, then Pappas scored on a sac fly to center field from Caden Highsmith for a 2-1 Rocket lead.
The Spartans had a chance to capitalize in the fourth, after Cade Mahlberg singled, stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out. With two out, Derek Wright's lined out on a diving catch by Northeast second baseman Jacob Stewart to end the East half of the inning.
Divis came through for the Rockets in the bottom of the fourth, when he hit a two-out double, then scored on an RBI single from Pappas for a 3-1 Northeast lead.
Divis then kept East's offense at bay by not allowing another hit the rest of the game, striking out three batters and allowing one walk.
Despite three errors, Northeast outhit East 10-2 in the game. Pappas went 3-for-4 for the Rockets, with an RBI. Divis and Cameron Rider each went 2-for-3, while Highsmith, Little and Burbach each collected one hit.
