By Jeff Motz
It took 14 hits and good base running for Lincoln North Star Monday afternoon to get an advantage over Lincoln East.
The Navigators also scored all of their runs five out of seven innings to earn a 10-6 victory over the Spartans at Sherman Field.
East got a lead off hit in the bottom of the first from Tyler Toews, who later scored on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Then North Star countered in second inning with Wade Deist reaching on a walk and his courtesy runner Jared Williams off a Chase Lauver ground out.
The Gators (7-4) rallied for three runs in the third inning. Jon Opfer led off with a single and a pair of wild pitches advanced him into scoring position at third base. He then scored after East shortstop Keaton Johnson snagged Austin Herzog's ground ball to try to get the force out, which resulted in catcher Cameron Lulow dropping the ball.
Two batters later, Brayden Cox drew a one-out walk and Deist's RBI single scored Herzog. Chris Van Dusen, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, singled and Lauver drive in Deist's courtesy runner, Williams, that gave North Star a 4-1 lead.
In the East half of the third, the Spartans rallied with one-out when Johnson doubled and Dylan Fitzgerald walked. Both advanced on a Jon Furnas ground out to short and scored on a two-run single from David Morris. Derek Wright reached on a throwing error from Herzog and Morris scored off a single from Lulow for a 4-4 ballgame.
North Star took the lead for good in the fourth, when Opfer reached on a throwing error from Johnson, then scored on a double from Trevor Murreel. Cox then drove in Murreel for a 6-4 Gator lead.
In the fifth, North Star got two hits and another run before East plated two more runs. Opfer took over pitching and shutdown the Spartans in the final two innings, only giving up two hits, striking out two and walking another. The Gators were able to bring in three more runs in the sixth inning to earn the win.
